Happy Birthday Detroit!
On Thursday, July 24 (tomorrow!) the City of Detroit will celebrate its 313th birthday. At Rock Paper Scissors, we love the 313.* From Belle Isle to Eastern Market, Campus Martius to Ponyride Detroit, we always relish the opportunity to visit our longtime favorite locations, while also discovering exciting new restaurants, watering holes, and much MUCH more in the D.
The Detroit Historical Society is hosting a birthday party for the Motor City on Thursday, July 24th with food trucks, brews from Atwater Brewery, and entertainment from the Motor City Soul Club. In honor of Detroit’s big birthday, we’ve pulled together some of our favorite Detroit themed gifts and goodies, perfect for celebrating 313 years in the 313.
We've got a lot of love for the Motor City! From pencils to postcards, notebooks to guide books, there's a whole lot of awesome lining the shelves at RPS, imported from the D.
While decidedly not a gift or product, we're still so very obsessed with our Detroit Jewel stove, on proud display in the kitchen section of Rock Paper Scissors Ann Arbor. A product of the Detroit Stove Works company, the Jewel had it's heyday of popularity in the 1920s, and we're so very happy this beautiful oven calls RPS home. Wanna know more? The illustrated aprons currently stocking the shelves in our Michigan section pay special homage to the city of Detroit, with vintage style lettering, plus illustrations of Joe Louis Arena, Motown, Comerica Park, Ford Field, the Palace of Auburn Hills, and automotive giants Ford and GM.

Perhaps two of our all time favorite things are included in this illustrated map: the state of Michigan and letterpress printing. A collaboration between Rock Paper Scissors and Belle & Union, this 11" x 14" art print is an RPS exclusive, with navy hand lettering and original illustrations of some of Michigan's most well known regions, including the City of Detroit in a flag icon.
At RPS, we are most certainly down with all things Detroit. Show your love for the D with these black and gold pencils, and more importantly, get down with your bad self at the birthday celebration for the 313 tomorrow, July 24!
